More than 130 firefighters have managed to bring a major blaze at a John Cootes furniture factory in Sydney's west under control.

Twenty-five fire trucks were called to the scene on Orchardleigh Street in Yennora just after 12:30pm (AEST) to extinguish the blaze.

Nearby cars were engulfed in flames and high voltage power lines caught fire, prompting authorities to evacuate between 200 and 300 people from neighbouring buildings.

More than 300 people have been evacuated from the complex and surrounding businesses. (9NEWS)

A nearby warehouse, which was at risk of collapse, was able to be saved.

Video from the 9NEWS chopper showed intense flames in the building, at least one car on fire and a towering column of thick black smoke rising over the suburb.

[Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Selwyn Mathias praised the work of responding crews in preventing the blaze spreading further.

“It’s not only through luck but the great work of the firefighters,” Mr Mathias said.

“This building is surrounded on its left and right, which really gave the initial firefighters a bit of concern.

“They did a fantastic job reducing the fire damage to those [surrounding buildings] with only some minor water damage.”
