NEARBY residents were warned to stay indoors as firefighters battled a blaze at a fibreglass factory in Melbourne’s northeast.
At least 15 Metropolitan Fire Bridge Trucks responded to reports of the fire breaking out at the Beatrice Ave building in Heidelberg West soon after midday.
The hazardous materials unit was also deployed as thick, acrid smoke plumes from the premises.
The contents of the large building were fully alight when crews arrived, with firefighters managing to contain the blaze to the building and alter bringing it under control.
Surrounding factories were evacuated.
The MFB urged residents within several hundred metres of the fire to close their doors and windows, stay inside, and call triple-0 if they experience breathing difficulties.
Crews will be on scene for the rest of the day.
The cause of the fire is so far unknown.
