An intense fire burning inside a discount goods store in Sydney's south-west has been brought under control.

About 85 firefighters worked to stop the blaze spreading to neighbouring shops at a suburban shopping centre in Liverpool on Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters said two people were treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns.

New South Wales Fire Commissioner Greg Mullins said the products inside the store acted as an accelerant.

"Well you can imagine a $2 shop; so there's shelves and stacks of very light material, cardboard and timber stacks, so that just went off like a bonfire," he said.

"Patrons were evacuating in a panic, [and there was a] very well established fire in the rear of the shop."

The flames are thought to have spread through the roof, but firefighters managed to contain the blaze to three shops.
