Recently, the use of plastic in construction has been growing as it is:
• light weight
• aesthetically desirable
• low-cost.
In a fire, plastic materials can:
• contribute to the fire and result in intense and rapidly developing fires
• release dense toxic smoke and affect fire brigade operations.
This topic describes two types of plastic materials used in building construction:
1 Expanded polystyrene sandwich (EPS) panels
2 Polyisocyanurate (PIR) sandwich panels
EPS panels
EPS panels became available in the 1980s and were quickly adopted in the construction of:
• cool rooms
• cold stores
• freezers.
