FM Global’s Fire safe building construction and materials (1993) defines fire-resistive construction as consisting of:
… materials that withstand fire within a building for the rated period without structural failure.
Depending on the fire rating, fire-resistive construction can reduce the consequence of a fire especially in multi-storey buildings.
